The KMT and Starbucks

KMT advertisement, Taipei, Taiwan, 2001
"The centre billboard is an advertisement for the KMT. In Chinese it reads "Zhongguo Guomindang" or "China/Chinese Nationalist Party/KMT". It is interesting because they put China before the party name (Guomindang). This is historically the case but differs from the DPP who would never advertise as "China DPP". You know the historical root of the KMT and the ROC and therefore know why they still (though a lot less now) seem to advertise as though they represent China. You also know that 'China' is often used officially in Taiwan, e.g., Academia Sinica which in Chinese is (Zhongyang yanjiuyuan or Central China Research Institute). This use of 'China' is increasingly rare.
Which is only slightly different from the ROC image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Republic_of_China_National_Emblem.svg
The flag of the ROC is slightly different again: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Republic_of_China
On a different subject my favourite Taiwan flag is that of the 1895 Republic of Formosa/Taiwan (Chinese): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Formosa
That didn't last long after the Mandarin left for the Mainland and left the Taiwanese to fend off the Japanese invasion (yes they still had to invade even though the Qing Dynasty ceded Taiwan to Japan and withdrew all military and governance)."
